Nursemaids Elbow? A Do It Yourself, Fix-it/Reduction Lesson!

This a dramatization of a familiar scene around these parts. This is just a Mama's advice (albeit a Mama who is nurse and the daughter of a pediatrician) on how to solve this problem at home....in hopes of avoiding an ER visit! You'll be so proud of yourself if you can do it yourself!

Reeves, our 7 year old, was around 18 months old when his elbow popped out of place for the first time (I think it happened a few more times, and this trick worked every time)! Dad said that as long as it's not out for too long, they shouldn't even need any pain medicine after it's back in place. A little Motrin probably wouldn't hurt, though. Remember, Motrin (i.e. Ibuprofen) is an anti-inflammatory & pain reliever, and it will probably help more than Tylenol. I personally only use Tylenol for fevers (along with Motrin)....I just think Motrin works better, but I digress....

Chris and I were swinging sweet Reeves between us when it popped out the first time. I had no idea why he was crying when I loaded him into the car. I thought he was just mad that Chris was leaving us to head back to work, but when his screams escalated....I knew something was wrong. I took one look at his arm in the rearview mirror, and I knew it was messed up. It dangled limp and lifeless while he grabbed for me with his good arm. I pulled over into the BP parking lot and frantically called my dad. To say I was hysterical is an understatement!

My ever calm father walked me through this little technique, and it worked like a charm. I have performed this maneuver more times than I can count and just yesterday I had to do it on Greer for the first time. I was pulling a floatie (or water wing...whatever you like to call it) onto her chubby little arm when I felt that little click. She immediately started wailing and I instinctively knew what I would see when I pulled off the floatie. Sure enough, her forearm dangled motionless as she flailed her good arm towards me. I jumped into action, and in 2 seconds flat she was good as new!

Here's what you do.....

Firmly grasp the arm just above the elbow with your left hand. Grasp the wrist with your other hand. You don't have to hold it very tightly, just a gentle firmness (does that make sense?)....

Gently rotate the wrist (while holding your left hand steady) toward her body...

And then back to the outside. You will probably feel a gentle "pop" as it goes back into place. The crying should end and she's good as new....

See? Sure....the popsicle helps, too!

It's that simple, friends! Now, I sure hope you'll seek adequate medical assistance if you think something else is going on. I just got so many requests for advice (after my tweet about it) that I had to post a "how to". Hope you never have to do it, but if you do.....

You're Set!!!

Thanks for sharing this!!! With mine, her arm wasn't limp but she wouldn't use it- not even to pick up her binky which is huge!! After a nap she was all better though so it must not have popped out but just hurt a bit.

It's good to know this if it ever does happen though!

Baker had nursemaids elbow about 6mo ago. I had never even heard of it and the dr. fix w/ your simple proceedure. Thanks for posting in case it happens again.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I wondered if maybe she might have popped it back in on her own. At least now I know what to do if it happens again :)

Thanks again!!

We had this happen to my son. My husband stayed home from church and was going to take him into the ER and when I got to church a DR friend asked where my husband was. He went to our house and did this. It is amazing how they are perfectly normal with no pain after. His arm has come out of joint a couple of times and my husband can do this after watching the Dr.

Lindsay said...

Oh - that's SO good to know, thanks!! My daughter's shoulder popped out of joint but somehow (and not by us) got back in before we were able to get to the doctor....got any advice on an out of whack shoulder??

Thank you so much for this post. It was a lifesaver for my niece after I lifted her up by her arms while playing a game. We were on a vacation in coastal Oregon and my sister had no health insurance! Your how to was a life saver and my three year old niece is as good as new!! thank you a million times over.

I just wanted to thank you for posting this. My son was taken to the ER by his Dad this morning and they told him it was either Nursemaid's Elbow or a sprained wrist. They suspected a sprained wrist. By the time he arrived to me, there had been no improvement and I found somewhat scary information about what can happen if it was Nursemaid's Elbow left untreated. My son had the exact symptoms so I followed your directions (and very helpful pictures). I can not tell you how grateful I am! It popped right back in and now my son is pain free for the first time since yesterday. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! :)

I found your blog after googling "how to fix nursemaid's elbow"! I was able to fix her arm by reading your blog while my husband was on the phone with the doctor. You saved us several hours and most importantly our daughter's arm is better!

I wasn't thinking today and tried to pull my two year old on to my bed, up by her arms. I felt a pop and she started screaming immediately. I panicked and called the doctor. He said it should heal on it's own but everything I've read said it won't and can't. I found your blog and my husband and I tried it. He felt "the pop" and after a few minutes our baby girl was right as rain!!!! Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts for posting this. You've saved my princess pain and I would kiss you if that wouldn't be weird. haha Have a fantastic day.

Thanks a ton for sharing this.My 1yr old daughter had nursemaid elbow on this Sunday and your blog did the fix.
As this is her second time, I didnt want to take her to the ER (first time bill was $700) but also couldnt see her in pain.Google search brought up your webpage and I followed everything you mentioned and felt confident seeing the demonstrative pics.
My little one was back smiling in few minutes...thank you soooo much.

Thank you so much for posting this information! My daughter has been to urgent care twice in the past 3 weeks for this (yesterday being the most recent)...and it happened again today! I did a search and came up with your site. I mustered up the courage, followed your instructions, and pop...back in place and all is well with the world! Thanks for saving me time and my daughter pain!

Leslie said...

Ditto all the other posts. You made a very content little girl, happy family and saved us oodles of cash! Whew!

Thanks for the tip. This happened to our almost-3 year old daughter a few weeks ago. Being first time parents, we didn't know what to do, and took her to urgent care. After several hours, the doctor said he fixed it, and she went to day care. However, it wasn't and one of the aides at child care popped it back.

Anyway, it happened, again this morning, and knowing what the condition was, I searched and found your blog. When my daughter woke up from her nap, I followed your directions and heard it pop back in place. Within moments, she pulled the covers up with both hands, started waving them around, and jumped right out of bed, as if nothing happened! Thanks, so much.

Thank you so much, you are Superwoman...I was so worried, my daughter was hysterical for 2 hours on and off I knew there was something wrong with her arm I just wasn't sure where it was or how to fix it until i saw this. It broke my heart, i found your site and it literally took 2 seconds to fix and she was perfect like nothing even happend. Thank you again.

I just wanted to thank you My little girl Ariel was playing with her sister when she fell and started favoring her elbow. She has been to the doctor before for this, so thanks to your do it your self step by step instructions she is feeling better and it saved me and my husband a trip to the ER!

So glad you blogged about this!! My daughter just had her 5TH ATTACK of nursemaid's elbow. The other times we went to the ER, doctor's office, and had a family friend who is a doctor do it. Figures today is a Sunday with no help anywhere. She is now 2 so she told us right away her arm hurt. I can't believe how easy it was to do it myself! Thanks again.
BTW, my daughter also has a hemangioma on her forehead. It's cavernous and we are not doing any treatment, just praying it goes away on its own by the time she's 5.

Sahamamama said...

Just tonight my husband hugged our 3.5 year old, Mary, as we put her to bed. She was goofing off and tried to plop down on the bed, and Daddy caught her by the arm. She cried and said her arm hurt, but my husband didn't think he had really done anything.

About an hour later, she came screaming out of her room, saying her arm hurt. When she didn't even want Hop Hop (her stuffed bunny), we know it was for real. We had never heard of nursemaid's elbow.

I took her to the ER, and she screamed the whole way. But as I carried her in, she said, "Mommy, my arm is better. It doesn't hurt any more." She could move it any way I asked her to, and she said she wanted to go home.

On the way home, she said, "Mommy, Jesus healed my arm. He made it better." PTL!

When we got back home my husband showed me your blog. Thanks for posting about this, now we know we are normal. ;) I feel better just knowing that her arm popped back in, and she has absolutely no pain or indication of a problem. Thanks.

we have had to take our daughter to th ER SOOOOOO many times for nursemaids elbow... 5 hours and hundred's of dollars later... UGH! She got nursemaids elbow again tonight... so we decided to google it... low and behold we found this post. THANK YOU!! She is as good as new with NO ER trip! :)

Thank you! We just experienced this with my 16 month old. It's after business hrs for the Dr and I did not want to have the ER experience/bill, or my baby in pain. So I reluctantly googled it and I'm glad I did. I found your site and a youtube video. We actually woke her up to do it and she immediately started using the arm again and went right back to sleep. Thank you for your help!

Hi,
Thanks for sharing this how-to!! I've had this happen 3 or 4 times with my daughter. The first time I had no CLUE what was wrong. We gave her some tylenol, wrapped it and put her to bed, praying for wisdom on what to do. After some searching on the internet, I FINALLY found what it was, but she'd fallen asleep and apparently it went in on its own that time.
I fixed it myself the next time from googling instructions, but I must say, they weren't as clear or easy to follow as yours. This time I didn't remember exactly how I'd done it, so I googled and got your blog post. I'm glad I did. Safe and VERY easy to do. She's in bed happy as a clam. Ari thanks you, and so do I :)

Thank you so much for posting this! Just fixed my 5 year old daughters arm.
Had seen it done in the ER with my son, but didn't pay attention.
My wife, a RN, was out shopping and still is.
If she answered her cell, she would have been summoned home.
I didn't want my daughter to have to wait the hour or so.
Felt the pop, but thought it was the wrist.
That was half an hour ago and my daughter just reported her are is "totally better."
Immediately after the pop, it was still sore.
Thanks again for posting this and helping others! You rock!

Thank you for this! I found your blog over a year ago...after my son had dislocated his elbow. The episode cost us a couple hours of agony and about $1200 in medical bills. Today, the same thing happened (he went limp while I was holding onto his hand) but I remembered what to do. Immediately after I felt the little pop, he said "It's all better." That's worth even more to me than the money we saved (though I can't lie, I'm pretty ecstatic about that, too)!

GOD BLESS YOU... we went to Urgent Care for this for my 18 month old about a month ago... (you know, when they do that dreaded "go-limp" thing at a store once you have missed their nap time ;-) I was so scared, I thought I broke her wrist trying to get her to stand up. I found it was "nursemaid's elbow"... but I didn't quite understand how the doctor reduced it back. Well, today it happened AGAIN in a bookstore. I knew immediately, and did not want to go to the doctor again, and I knew it was an easy fix... she was crying so hard! I found your blog, and the instructions were so easy, and so effective... thank you very very much!!!!!! Worked perfectly. THANK YOU!!!!!!! :-)

Our daughters elbow popped out for the second time. The first time we had an ER visit. Lots of xrays and no results. We just rotate towards body and that's all it took! Thanks so much.

Sure enough I could hear the click sound and in seconds she was writing with the hand. Dad was in disbelief saying you fixed my daughter. Had a little happy teary session. Thank you so much , my daughter is a spitfire and a bundle of fun. So when she started crying in pain arm bent not moving i worried but she had done before and i didnt know what was wrong. I iced her shoulder not knowing and gave her motrin and took her to bed it took hours of whimpering for her to pass out from exhaustion. Thats when this worried momma took to the internet and discovered this article . I followed the instructions and with little effort and a whimper from my baby i felt the pop and she passed out again moving her arm into a more comfortable position. Im so grateful for your help in helping my baby girl thank you so much !!!

Thank you so much for this. The fist time this happened to my daughter some how she got it back into place herself so I didn't get a chance to figure out what was wrong. Your blog was very easy to follow and it worked with no problem.

Thank you so much for this! My wife had lifted our 1 year old up go get on the bed yesterday and her arm popped and she couldn't use her arm and was crying hysterically. I rushed home from work since she is my baby girl and I took her to the ER. They took x rays and said they thought it popped back into place on its own during the x-ray because she was squirming so much. We went home and she still could not use her arm and I had a bad feeling. I read this article and I went home praying that this would work. Lo and behold I tried it I felt a pop she started crying and then she calmed down and now can move her arm and is actually laughing and playing again! The people at my hometown hospital aren't known for being great at their practice so thank you. You made a little girl happy again as well as her parents.

By any chance the illustration pics above 2nd pic and 3rd pic was interchanged by mistake. Where it says "rotate wrist towards her body" the pic shows her fingers pointed away from her body. I was reading slowly multiple times, maybe I am missing something.

Thank you so much for this, I am in France and the prospect of a visit to A&E and describing in French how our 18 month old had hurt her arm whilst playing row-row the boat with her sister this morning, was a little worrying. I knew she hadn't broken anything, and came across the possibility of nursemaids elbow online, it made the most sense. Being as gentle as I could I followed your instructions and felt a tiny click as I did it! She is now using the arm fully again, picking up heavy books etc, after not even wanting to lift a tiny piece of chocolate to her mouth! (and she LOVES chocolate!!!) So thank you so much for this, I really, really appreciated it!!!
