I declare today....

..... an Apostle's Creed day!

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth at the right hand of the Father Almighty.
from thence he shall come again to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

I need it to be about this today.

And the winner is....

.....lucky number 8 (generated via random.org). I would take a screen shot to prove it, but I have no idea how to do that! Anyone??

Congratulations, Amy!

Giveaway Day!

It crept up on me this time! Summertime is hectic and hot downright miserable in my humble opinion. That's my excuse! But no matter, here we go....

Click that cute little button up there to read the long version. Here's the short one....

Times are Tight!

You probably have friends who have lost their jobs, or others who can't find one. It is impossible to turn on the TV, read the paper, or surf the web without hearing about what a bad state our economy is in. We are all cutting back in one way or another, and many of us are trying to find ways to make a little extra money.

I have friends who have small businesses. Some of them have been around for a while, and some of them are brand new. I want to help them, and that's what these giveaways are all about! Each month or so, I will highlight a friend's business. It will give them a chance to show off their stuff, and of course....

Give Something Away

I can't tell you how excited I am about the giveaway today! Blog Designer Extraordinaire, Danielle, is in the process of expanding her business to include all sorts of cool design products. One of her newest items is stationary (she also offers invitations and recipe cards and business cards)....

For those of you wondering who I'm talking about, Danielle designed my blog. Everything you see here is her handiwork (minus the photos of my precious children, and for their beauty, I give all the credit to my awesome God...but I digress). She is immensely talented, and I am honored to call her my friend. We talk all the time and knowing her makes her work even more beautiful to me. If you're in the market for a blog makeover, she's your girl.

Amazingly talented, gracious, easy to work with, brilliantly creative, and fun.....you will NOT regret a single minute of it!

So, let's help her get her newest venture (print work) off the ground. The winner of this contest will receive a free custom stationary design (select one of her gorgeous children's or personal templates and make it your own). Just look at what she came up with for my friend Corey as a gift for her new arrivals!

Danielle will design it, upload it to VistaPrint, and then you can go and order your own prints...the design of the card will be the prize. If you haven't ever used VistaPrint, it's really easy and user friendly (and quite affordable)!

I have already decided that I will go to Danielle with all my future stationary needs....her work is unique and amazing, and her prices are way better then what I can find around my parts. Best thing? I know I am supporting an amazing woman whom I call a friend. What could be better?!

Soooooo....how do you enter?

It's simple! Just leave a comment. One comment per person, please, and have fun browsing through her work. And don't fret....

Everyone is a winner for this one! Danielle is offering $5 off any print design if you order in the next week and mention that I sent you! How's that for a giveaway!

I'll announce the winner on Tuesday morning....so voting will be open till I decide to close it. Comment away (and if you want to make it useful, tell me your favorite Summer cool down tip or activity....we are dyin' round here!).

Tonight, I might meet my boyfriend....

***Update****

The concert was every bit as amazing as I had hoped it would be....and more. If you ever have the chance to catch David Wilcox, you should go....he really is an unbelievable artist. I mean talented and real and pure and full of faith. And WorkPlay is an awesome venue....I can't wait to have a reason to go back soon. Some old friends just happened to be there, too, and we had a great reunion of sorts. It felt fresh and real and it filled us up.

It's rare for Chris and I to get out to do much of anything alone, but this date was extra special. We are in a better place in our marriage than we have been in a really long time, and we have a lot to be thankful for. I've never felt more at peace in my marriage than I have lately....

What a wonderful privilege it is to share my life with my best friend.

So below the picture is my original post from Saturday.....

I didn't get to meet him, but just being there was gift enough. What an amazingly talented soul!

....just kidding!

well sorta. I do love him!

I really would love to meet him. I've been a fan since the early 90's and I know the words to every song he's written. I follow him on twitter, and he's even tweeted me back a few times....I know. It's sorta sickening. I don't care. He is amazing.

Chris is aware of this love affair I have with David Wilcox music. He tolerates it like I tolerate his love affair with Jane Seymour, Steve Green, 24, and Russell Crowe (don't ask....).

So, David is gonna be in town tonight (at WorkPlay if you're a local), and if it weren't for my sweet friend Katherine, I might have missed him. I haven't been keeping up with his tour schedule quite as diligently as I did in college when I went to see him anytime he was within a 100 mile radius. I think it has a little bit to do with having little kids and forgetting what it means to be an actual adult.

An adult who goes out for dinner at an adult type restaurant with her husband. An adult who goes to a concert that features an actual musician and not a ginormous muppet! I've already picked out my outfit and booked a babysitter (helps that I have the most amazing live-in babysitter on the planet)! We'll eat dinner without wiping mouths or cutting meat or breaking up a fight.

Bliss!

Nothing can bring me down today.

The Cajun Cleaver

I would like to introduce you to my friends, Nick and Adrienne....

And their new store.....

Words cannot describe the awesomeness of this place! If you live in my neck of the woods (you know who you are, wink wink), you can't go another WEEK without stopping in. I've told you before that I love supporting small businesses....I have a special place in my heart for the local entrepreneur. Well, I've been waiting for this little business to open up for a while now. Nick and Adrienne are my friends because we share a love of a certain little family who moved to a certain little town in North Carolina. That's all I can say on the subject without bursting into tears.

But I digress.....

The Cajun Cleaver is a specialty butcher shop PLUS plus, plus, plus, plus....

It's the PLUS that I'm most excited about.

See, I'm a mom. A rather busy mom. A mom who enjoys delicious food and entertaining and taking meals to friends. I love to cook, but sometimes it's just too darned hot hard to get my act together. I have kids and a husband who love to eat yummy food. That's where this place has swooped in to save my sanity!

Affordable, delicious, ready to pop in the oven and heat up meals! Who could ask for anything more? They have entrees, side dishes, and the greatest peanut butter pie you will ever eat (not to mention all sorts of meats and soups and sauces and gumbo)! If you follow me on twitter, you may have seen my tweets about our supper Wednesday night. My sister was coming in with all 3 of her little ones, and the last thing we had a second to do wanted to do was spend the evening in the kitchen.

After an afternoon at the pool, Lucy, Caroline and I ran down and picked up a couple of entrees (chicken tetrazzini and penne pasta with meatballs and marinara.....oh, and some sausages to grill for appetizers). For $30, I fed 6 adults and 5 kiddos.....now THAT is a deal! I plan on stopping by soon for another easy meal night!

So here's what I'm thinking.....

Why not stock up on a few meals to carry with me to the beach in a couple of weeks....how easy will that be? And next time a friend is in the hospital or has a baby, I'm stopping by to let Nick do the cooking! It's as good as homemade....maybe even better!

Just had to share this little treasure with all my local readers. Sorry if you aren't close enough to enjoy it.....maybe one day they'll franchise!!!

P.S. (for Adrienne)....the kids LOVED the meatballs. I mean L.O.V.E.D!!!! I'll call you and tell you what else they had to say....it was really funny :)

Wow....I'm Overwhelmed!!!

...with love and support! Y'all are the best!

Welcome to my little corner of the world wide web. I know that many (and I am amazed with how many) of you are here for the first time today. After a rather impromptu interview (and I DO mean impromptu) on the Rick and Bubba Show this morning, I never could have imagined that so many would click over. I am so honored!

So this is me. Consider this blog a work in progress.....just like me. I struggle like everyone else. As a mom, wife, nurse, sister, daughter, daughter-in-law, friend, child of God.....

I blog about the good the bad and the wonderful (and if I'm totally honest....the boring!). I host a giveaway every month or so to help my friends who own small businesses. I feed my love of writing. I try to show what Christ has done (and is doing) in my little life, and I take lots and lots and LOTS of pictures (no, Chris wasn't kidding....my friends and family DO call me the paparazzi)! I ask for prayers for friends and family. I ask for prayers for myself.

I post recipes, and funny stories, and pieces of my heart. I share tips that make my life easier and love when others give me ideas in the comments. I tweet a lot, too, and you can follow my day if you want to be totally bored! Only partly kidding....

I have no agenda, and I do it mostly for me. I want to chronicle our real life, and connect with my family and friends...in words, pictures, moments. I want to bring people to Christ and foster relationship. I want to grow every day! So that's about it.

P.S. Thanks for all the votes.....

I'm NOT ashamed that it would be great to win (not that I think I'll actually win anything other than bragging rights.....but hey, that's somethin'!)

Hope you'll come back soon. So nice to meet you!

Nursemaids Elbow? A Do It Yourself, Fix-it/Reduction Lesson!

This a dramatization of a familiar scene around these parts. This is just a Mama's advice (albeit a Mama who is nurse and the daughter of a pediatrician) on how to solve this problem at home....in hopes of avoiding an ER visit! You'll be so proud of yourself if you can do it yourself!

Reeves, our 7 year old, was around 18 months old when his elbow popped out of place for the first time (I think it happened a few more times, and this trick worked every time)! Dad said that as long as it's not out for too long, they shouldn't even need any pain medicine after it's back in place. A little Motrin probably wouldn't hurt, though. Remember, Motrin (i.e. Ibuprofen) is an anti-inflammatory & pain reliever, and it will probably help more than Tylenol. I personally only use Tylenol for fevers (along with Motrin)....I just think Motrin works better, but I digress....

Chris and I were swinging sweet Reeves between us when it popped out the first time. I had no idea why he was crying when I loaded him into the car. I thought he was just mad that Chris was leaving us to head back to work, but when his screams escalated....I knew something was wrong. I took one look at his arm in the rearview mirror, and I knew it was messed up. It dangled limp and lifeless while he grabbed for me with his good arm. I pulled over into the BP parking lot and frantically called my dad. To say I was hysterical is an understatement!

My ever calm father walked me through this little technique, and it worked like a charm. I have performed this maneuver more times than I can count and just yesterday I had to do it on Greer for the first time. I was pulling a floatie (or water wing...whatever you like to call it) onto her chubby little arm when I felt that little click. She immediately started wailing and I instinctively knew what I would see when I pulled off the floatie. Sure enough, her forearm dangled motionless as she flailed her good arm towards me. I jumped into action, and in 2 seconds flat she was good as new!

Here's what you do.....

Firmly grasp the arm just above the elbow with your left hand. Grasp the wrist with your other hand. You don't have to hold it very tightly, just a gentle firmness (does that make sense?)....

Gently rotate the wrist (while holding your left hand steady) toward her body...

And then back to the outside. You will probably feel a gentle "pop" as it goes back into place. The crying should end and she's good as new....

See? Sure....the popsicle helps, too!

It's that simple, friends! Now, I sure hope you'll seek adequate medical assistance if you think something else is going on. I just got so many requests for advice (after my tweet about it) that I had to post a "how to". Hope you never have to do it, but if you do.....

You're Set!!!

Save My Sumatanga

I got 5 million chigger bites standing in the Chigger Bowl in a ring of candle-light after a powerful evening program. I know right where the jar of soggy cotton balls are that will take the itch out.

Jesus lives at Camp Sumatanga and every time I am there I feel like I am closer to Him. The view from the Chapel is more breathtaking than can be described in even the most beautiful poem. I hiked that trail up the mountain every year, and I have scars from all the rock bites I got along the way. I can't even count how many times I sat in that primitive stone Chapel looking out over the lake while enjoying a soggy peanut butter and honey sandwich and weak pink lemonade. Up there, the air is different.

I can still taste it.

I traded warm fuzzies. I waded in the creek. I painted on rocks and sent them home to my little sister. I waited to find mail from home on the pool table after lunch in the air-conditioned Dining Hall.....mealtimes were some of my favorite times. I sang my blessings and now my children sing all those old songs when we sit down for meals at home.

"Thank you God for giving us Food!!!"

I played four square in the breezeway and softball in the chigger bowl. I got sent back to my cabin to get my nametag before they would let me into the dining hall for a meal. I bent down to feel the cool spring water air on my face after a sweaty hike to Air Conditioned Rock.

I rehearsed interpretive dances to perform at evening program. I sat on the cool concrete floor in the Assembly Hall and listened to Nina Reeves (our son's namesake) say "Whammity Bang, Whammity Bang...". Oh the stories she could tell.....and the lives she touched. Seeing her at Jenny and John Paul's wedding brought tears to my eyes. What a beautiful soul (and tough one) she is.....

I danced to Buttercup and Alley Cat and Amos Moses till I could do it in my sleep.

I prayed and prayed and listened and learned sooooo much about my Sweet Jesus. I got to share my faith with boy-crazy 13 year olds and prayed that they would "get it". I think about a few of them still and wonder how they are doing. Some of them are still my friends.

I get my best night's sleep on a top bunk in Cabin 7. I can still feel the dirt on my sheets from sandy concrete floors. I can still hear the hum of the massive fans that circulated the heavy Alabama night-time air. I prayed that there wouldn't be a spider in the shower and that the two toilets shared by 30 squealing 12 year olds would not stop-up.

I listened to great and powerful music and was introduced to David Wilcox.....my most favorite musician of all time. The sweet sound of music filling the woods would bring tears to my eyes.

At Camp Sumatanga.....I met my beloved.

This is My Sumatanga.

And it is in great danger of closing. I can't imagine my life without it, and I want my children to grow up there like Chris and I did. I want others to find Jesus there. Please pray for Sumatanga....

If you live in Alabama and are looking for an amazing place to have a retreat for your church (every denomination is welcome), I URGE you to introduce your leaders to this amazing place. You will NOT regret it.....and if you visit there or you have your own memories of Sumatanga, I would love to hear your stories. What is YOUR Sumatanga like??

And if you feel led to give to Sumatanga.....well that would just be amazing!

...."Let no one say, and say to your shame, that this was a place of beauty till you came."

Raleigh: One Lucky Town!

Friday night, we celebrated our friends Keith and Amy with an awesome party at her friend Jackie's house. The silver teardrops on that Pig's face say it all....

And on Saturday, Amy, Keith, Jake and Abby moved to Raleigh. With a heavy heart, a glass raised high, a hug and a kiss.....we let them go.

I know we will see them soon. That's what happens in true friendship, but it doesn't make it any easier. We talked on the phone this morning, and I just couldn't believe that she was so far away. I wanted to pop in and share a cup of coffee and watch our kids play in the backyard.

She's having a hard day today, and I have a feeling there will be more hard days in the coming weeks and months. Sweet Abby (her 8 year old) is having the hardest time adjusting. She is a social butterfly who had lots of friends. She is scared and lonely and it is breaking Amy's heart.

Everytime I think about it, I well up....

And I say a prayer for them.....

Even looking at this picture makes me cry. I just hope Raleigh knows how lucky she is. Soon she will see!

Will you please say a prayer for my friend.....and for me? This is so much harder than I thought it would be. I can't imagine how hard it must be for them.

Fabulous Friday: Fabulous Photos!

I love this fun little Fabulous Friday event, so I decided to join in again this week!  Danielle is asking us to share fabulous photos.  I'm in the process of organizing all my photos (it is turning out to be an enormous job and it is my summer project for 2009....I've just declared it!).  I'm taking a walk down memory lane and loving it.

I didn't start this blog till right after Greer was born, so there aren't any pictures of the older two in their younger years.  Maybe I'll start some Flashback posts to share some older pictures of them.

For Fabulous Friday, I've decided to spotlight some of my most favorite photos from 2006.  I especially enjoyed seeing how Lucy's hair evolved during that year.  There's hope for Greer yet!

Enjoy....

March 2006, The first time (yes she has broken both of her legs) Lucy broke her leg.  Right before our trip to Walt Disney World (don't worry, we left her behind with my mom).

March 2006, Reeves and Chris in Walt Disney World.

May 2006, Lucy on her 2nd birthday.  She was absolutely hysterical at that age....well, she still is pretty funny and fabulous.  And I loved that bathing suit....it was fabulously adorable!  Speaking of fabulous...

June 2006, Sitting on the countertop at our new house (we moved here in April of 2006).  I don't think I ever noticed the knives before....yikes!  I still love this one.

August 2006, You won't believe what a big day this was in our world!  This photo was taken on a day that marked both the end of diapers for our first girl AND her first haircut.  It was a huge day in our little Lulu's life!  If you can't tell, she was pretty proud of herself.

October 2006, I took tons of pictures of my kids with my nieces when my sister came down that October.  I have got to get snappin' while they are here this time!  These photos are some of my favorites!

No WAIT!  This is my absolute favorite from that year!  You wouldn't believe how Lucy worked that Captain Hook costume!  They were hilarious and stayed in character for all of Halloween.  We even had our own Nana (yes, she was named after the beloved pet from Peter Pan).  Reeves was obsessed with Peter Pan that year!

December 2006, Merry Christmas Y'all!  I can't believe how much they grew that year!

Wanna join in?  I would love to see your fabulous photos....and you'll love getting to know Danielle.  She is precious!  Click on her cute button below to check it out!

Swirly....

I haven't really been around these parts too much the past few days.  In fact, the past few weeks have been a bit crazy.  I have so many things that are heavy on my heart....lots of little pieces of me that I want to share, but I've just been too darn busy to get my writing act together.

I'm getting there though....stay tuned.

The best I can do is post a few pictures of our days and some sweet commentary to go along with it.  I guess that's all well and good, and there's no going back, but I really want this to be about more than just that.

Don't get me wrong.....

This blog is mostly just for me (and I mean that in a good way not in the totally narcissistic way it sounds).  I go back and look at what we were doing this time last year and it is so wonderful to have it all here in one place.  I know I am going to treasure this for a lifetime and that was my sole purpose for starting this blog.....

I don't scrapbook, and I am horrible at keeping my pictures organized.  Lucy's baby book is barely halfway finished, and Greer's is simply stuffed with hospital bands, footprints, photos from friends, check-up notes jotted by my pediatrician, and ultrasound pictures.  I have yet to write a single thing down.  Reeves, the typical first child, has a book that is filled to the brim with all sorts of details like "June 18th, 2003....the day I finger-painted for the first time"....Yes, it is sickening in a totally good way!

Erin, I promise to finish Greer's book.....I PROMISE!

Mom, I totally get it!  Totally!

So what have I been up to?  Well, if you really want to know....

I'm enjoying some time with my middle sister who lives far away.  I've enjoyed holding my almost brand new nephew and laughing with my nieces.  I'm snapping lots of shots of them, but not enough.   I'm leaving my cell phone in my mother's car and feeling naked without it.  Eating shaved ice and letting Lucy discover things like "Mr. Pig"....she thinks it's delicious.  I'm taking my kids to Costco and spending 3 hours discovering all sorts of awesome treasures (have you SEEN the new bandaid package?  It is amazing!!!).  Grilling steak, folding laundry, organizing toys, bathing Greer and tending to her bug bites, making Reeves and Lucy clean up their rooms, enjoying a glass of wine on the deck and talking to Chris about our day, watering my new flowers and taking out the trash....and those are only a few of the things I did today!

Other than that....

I'm planning a going away party for my best friend.  Teaching her how to blog....since I gave her one as a going away present!  Don't worry.  She was planning on starting one anyway....I just wanted it to be gorgeous.  Danielle worked her magic!  Speaking of Danielle....I've been praying for her.  And Jen.  And Mary.  And Adrienne

And I just found out that Sweet Stellan needs our prayers right now!

I'm diving into our new church head-on.  Singing in the choir, leading VBS on our block (later in the Summer), joining a small group, befriending new church friends on Facebook and Twitter.   Knowing that where we are is because it is where we were called to be.  ....a place that is:  Amazing.  On-fire.  Real.  and Right for us.  We have nothing but love for all the people at our old church and it will always have a special place in our heart.  We are grateful for our friends there and for all it has been to us and so many others through the years.  May it grow and prosper and bring people to Christ.

I'm trying to keep up with all my dear old friends (not that they are old.....really, just forever friends).  Making a list of all the thank you notes I need to send and all the gifts I need to buy....but knowing that I'm really the only one who's worried about that.  Pacing myself is my new motto!  Feeling guilty about all the extended family that we need to visit, but knowing that they love us no matter how often we call or visit.  Grateful for understanding...getting away to ANYWHERE with 3 small children is a feat!

Working 2 days a week at the hospital, and trying to do better at my "paying" job every time I am there.  It's not too hard....since Nursing and Labor and Delivery are a calling for me.  I am so thankful to have a wonderful career that allows so much flexibility with amazing benefits and rewards.  God is so Good!  Not that I didn't know that already!

I'm reading to my children, praying with and for them and letting them enjoy a carefree summer.  I'm letting them stay up late and hoping they'll sleep late in return.  That isn't happening very much.  Well....except for Greer.  She is a sleeping machine.

and on the other side of the coin....I'm losing my cool more often than I'd like to admit, and doing my best to be more patient.  I'm asking my children to forgive me when I fall, and working on being more consistent in my discipline techniques.  I'm focusing on my marriage and praying every day for my precious husband.  What a blessing he is to me, and I am sooo very proud of him.

I'm trying to stay cool as the weather gets more miserable, but grateful that I have an awesome pool to go to every day.  I'm letting my kids eat ice-cream for lunch and breakfast for dinner.  I've fallen off the Weight Watchers wagon and gained 5 pounds back....Summer months are the hardest for me when it comes to dieting.....

This list could go on and on and on.

I'll be done for now.

Bet you'd prefer the pretty pictures and happy commentary!  Night dear friends....I feel better now!

Gotta love.....

a day that is supposed to start out with this.....

but ended up looking like this!

Sunday, June 14, 2009

Lots to tell....but I'm pacing myself!

It's been a busy weekend, and I thought I would share some pictures with you before we start our week.....and what a week it will be!

My sister, Rachel, was supposed to be here on Friday, but if you follow me on twitter, you know that didn't happen.  Her flight was cancelled due to "technical difficulties," and she (and her 3 precious children) didn't arrive till this morning (ushered in by a fierce storm).  We are so excited to have them here for a couple of weeks...stay tuned for lots more stories and pics.

The highlight of our Saturday?  The joyful wedding celebration of our friends Jenny and John Paul.  It was sort of a colliding of 2 worlds....we were friends with both the bride and groom at different stages of our life.  We shared the evening with lots and lots of friends, from near and far!  It was a blessed ceremony followed by a rockin' party.

Just wish I had taken more pictures!  I did manage to get one of my mom with the kids.  As you can see....Greer didn't want to be held down.  That girl was all OVER the place!  Chris chased Greer around the whole night and he was a little tired today!

I have to share this funny story about that....

A sweet friend of Chris' family (someone who probably changed HIS diaper in his younger years) pulled me aside and confided, "I can't tell you how much I am loving watching Chris run around chasing that little girl with a diaper in his hand!"  It made me laugh, too!

At some point, I turned the camera over to Lucy, and she caught me enjoying some delicious strawberry wedding cake....does it get any better than that?

Sweet Reeves!  Lucy captured this shot of his newest freckles.  I should turn the camera over to her more often.  Love this boy!

And today, we met Henry!  Erin was holding him and he was just cooing away.  Promise to capture his sweet face for you to see.  Don't worry.....there'll be lots of time for that!  For now, you can just enjoy his yummy baby head!

Reeves and Olivia.  They have a precious little bond.  I can't wait to share some stories.  And if you can't tell by the picture....she is a mess!  Lucy and Caroline are like two peas in a pod, too.  It is amazing how your nieces and nephews can feel like your own children....the love just grows with each new addition to the family!

So I hope you enjoyed just a few quick pics and details....not nearly enough to do it all justice.  I'll fill you in as I find more time, but for now, it's time to hang with my sisters.  I love when we are all together.

Fabulous Friday: Summer Treats!

I have been meaning to join in on the Fabulous Friday fun for weeks now, but haven't gotten my act together till now! This one is right up my alley, so I thought I would give it a shot.

My sweet friend, Danielle (yes, we really have become friends) and blog designer extraordinaire hosts this fun bloggy carnival every Friday! I hope you'll join in the fun, too!

So, here's my little entry for this week.....

I think Lucy is completely addicted. We have visited the local shaved ice haunt EVERY DAY this week...

....and we have not been disappointed. It's good, cheap fun, y'all! Can't beat a $1 ice-cold treat on a hot Alabama day. Speaking of a hot Alabama day.....

Can't beat the fake flower foliage that you get (not to mention the AstroTurf) to enjoy while you tackle your icy deliciousness! There's nothing better than enjoying an artificially flavored, sugar-filled delight right outside the local BP Gas Station!

Mmmmmmmmmm! They really are AWESOME!

As for dessert....well, this is how we roll! Enjoy! (Oh, and make sure you scroll down to the bottom and pause my play list before you click play on this video)! Eat UP and Happy Summer, Y'all!
